The Heart Behind Coastal Cats & Critters
Coastal Cats & Critters grew from a simple truth: every cat deserves safety, dignity, and a life where they are not forgotten. What began with two feral kittens rescued from a condo dumpster became the spark for a mission that now stretches across 19 peaceful acres on the Alabama coast. As founder Mona Brown witnessed the growing crisis of neglect, abandonment, and overcrowded shelters — nearly 1,000 cats euthanized every day nationwide — she knew our community needed a place where vulnerable cats could finally exhale.
Today, that dream lives on in a sanctuary built for the animals who have nowhere else to go. Senior cats, feral cats, FELV-positive residents, and medically complex companions find lifelong refuge here. Every intake begins with a full medical exam, spay/neuter when needed, and a thoughtful plan for their future. Cats who cannot be adopted live freely and comfortably for life; those who can be adopted enjoy the same cage-free environment while we search for their perfect home.
Who We Are
-
Coastal Cats & Critters exists to provide lifelong sanctuary, compassionate care, and a safe haven for vulnerable, senior, and medically complex cats along the Alabama coast. Our mission is to protect the forgotten, reduce suffering through TNR and community education, and build a kinder, more informed community where every animal is treated with dignity.
-
Coastal Cats & Critters serves the animals who need someone to stay — the seniors, the medically complex, the FELV‑positive, and the cats who are abandoned, injured, chronically ill, or living outdoors without protection.
We also serve the people of our community — families, children, volunteers, and neighbors — by offering education, TNR support, compassionate outreach, and a model of responsible, lifelong care.
-
Coastal Cats & Critters offers programs designed to protect vulnerable coastal cats and strengthen our community through compassion. Our work includes lifelong sanctuary care for seniors and medically complex cats, TNR support to reduce suffering before it starts, and community education through kid-friendly classes, field trips, and hands-on learning. Every program is built around dignity, safety, and responsible care — and powered entirely by donors who believe every cat deserves a chance to live a peaceful, protected life.
It takes a Village
Lifelong Sanctuary
The lifelong sanctuary at Coastal Cats & Critters is a safe, peaceful home for the cats who can’t thrive anywhere else — seniors, FELV‑positive residents, feral-born companions, and those with chronic or complex medical needs. Here, they live freely and comfortably for life, surrounded by dignity, stability, and gentle daily care. Our lifelong sanctuary care is built on compassion, thoughtful routines, and the belief that every cat deserves a place where they are protected, understood, and loved without conditions.
Because Love Doesn’t End
The Legacy Program at Coastal Cats & Critters is our promise that no cat will ever be left without a safe place to go when life changes for the people who love them. Through the future Legacy House, we offer lifelong sanctuary for cats whose caregivers become unable to continue their care due to illness, aging, or passing. This program ensures every cat has a secure, loving home — one built on dignity, stability, and continuity.
Families can register their cats in advance, knowing their companions will be protected, cherished, and cared for with the same devotion they’ve always known. It’s more than a plan — it’s a lasting act of love, and a way to give your animals the future they deserve.
